Expert Guidance for Psychological Challenges

Individual Psychotherapy

Dr. Decter sees individual therapy clients for short and long-term work for a wide range of psychological problems including anxiety, depression, trauma/PTSD, work stress/ burnout. He has a strong interest in working with individuals with anxiety problems (GAD, panic, OCD health anxiety, phobias and fears–e.g., flying, public speaking, and performance anxiety). Dr. Decter also works with clients to assist them through developmental/life transitions (e.g., work/career transitions, relationship transitions, and financial transitions) as well as major life transitions around grief and loss. Dr. Decter assists clients to enhance well-being and facilitate personal growth, develop and clarify values, career and life-directions, using positive psychology interventions and approaches.

Empowering Life Management

CBT Coaching for ADHD

Dr. Decter provides coaching for adults who have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder to help them:

  1. Develop a constructive understanding and healthy acceptance of how ADHD impacts different aspects of their life;
  2. Learn strategies and skills to manage their lives with greater effectiveness at home, work or school, and in relationships.

“Cognitive-Behavioral” indicates that coaching focuses on understanding an individual’s thoughts and beliefs about their ADHD so they can deal with symptoms and problems objectively and effectively. As well, Dr. Decter works with individuals to examine and change aspects of behaviour that have been impacted by ADHD as well as examining environmental factors and structures that can be developed and harnessed to make daily living easier and more productive. This type of coaching is always tailored to the individual and the focus is inherently practical.

Workplace Resilience Restoration

Work Stress, Workplace Injury, and Burnout

Dr. Decter works with clients presenting with workplace stress and burnout to heal, recover, improve resilience, and successfully return to work on a time-table designed to maximize a client’s overall health and well-being over the long-term. Dr. Decter helps clients to cultivate workplace resilience by improving communication and assertiveness skills, stress-management skills, and developing better workplace boundaries and a more manageable and effective work-life balance.

For clients who are experiencing stress at work, the initial phase of treatment is assessment and diagnosis to determine how work-place stress is impacting a person’s functioning in the workplace and in their general life and relationships. Dr. Decter then helps and supports clients to communicate effectively with the workplace about their mental health needs and facilitates effective treatment and careful structuring and diligent client-centered monitoring of return-to-work plans, in order to maximize the likelihood of a successful work-return with minimum stress. Support includes providing clients with documentation for work-related problems and conditions, based upon clinical assessment, as needed.

Dr. Decter works with rehabilitation clients referred through Manitoba Public Insurance, to promote recovery from psychological injuries due to motor vehicle accidents and plan for successful work return or preparation for alternative employment.

Dr. Decter works with clients referred after workplace injuries, from the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba, with the goal of helping clients to heal, manage pain from physical injury, recover from psychological injuries and stress, and promote eventual return to past employment or to alternative employment.

Mindful Pathways to Personal Wellness

Individualized Coaching in Mindfulness-Integrated Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Dr. Decter provides individualized coaching for clients interested in improving their well-being, personal relationships, improving mood, and decreasing or eliminating anxiety and trauma symptoms, using Mindfulness-Integrated Cognitive Behavioural therapy (MiCBT).

MiCBT is a structured, evidenced based four-stage intervention program that uses a graded series of mindfulness practices to assist clients to let go of distressing emotional responses, upsetting thoughts, reactions, worries and problematic patterns of thinking.

MiCBT is a multi-step meditation program that focuses on helping clients to dissolve conditioned patterns of reactivity and behaviour that are causing problems in their daily lives and relationships.

Dr. Decter has been trained to coach clients through MiCBT for maximum benefit, individualizing the structure of the program and the pace of the practices to help clients with diverse needs to maximize effectiveness.
