Dr. Decter is expert in a broad range of behavioural and cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) approaches and techniques for helping clients with anxiety and depression, PTSD and many other types of problems.

Dr. Decter is also very experienced in employing emotion focused and psychodynamic approaches for intensive short-term and long term depth work with clients. All of Dr. Decter’s work with clients is informed by his training and knowledge of both psychological science and mindfulness practice. As a registered clinical psychologist all of the interventions that Dr. Decter employs have a strong science and evidence base.

Dr. Decter believes that psychotherapy must always be individualized as every human being is different and special with their own history, relationships, problems, goals, values and strengths. Dr. Decter believes therapy is most effective in an atmosphere of unconditional acceptance and non-judgmental openness as this helps clients feel free and empowered to explore their problems, feelings and thoughts with close attention, understand their problems deeply, heal, become stronger, and arrive at long-lasting solutions and durable change.

As mentioned, Dr. Decter has an abiding interest in mindfulness-based therapies, which he uses in almost all of his work with clients. These evidence-based approaches promote stable attentional focus and decrease unhelpful reactivity to emotions or in relationships and allow clients to let go of worry, rumination, and over-thinking. Dr. Decter uses a range of mindfulness-based techniques in his practice with clients to help with diverse difficulties. One powerful approach that has wide applicability to diverse psychological problems is Mindfulness-Integrated Cognitive Behavior Therapy (MiCBT) an evidence-based therapeutic program, applicable to anxiety problems, depression, chronic pain, trauma as well as personal development and growth.
