Dr. Decter has been in practice as a psychotherapist and clinical psychologist since 2003. He completed undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Chemistry, winning the University Gold Medal in Honours Psychology at the University of Winnipeg prior to pursuing scholarship funded graduate work at McGill University in Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology.
Dr. Decter is a duly registered psychologist and a member of the Psychological Association of Manitoba (PAM), the regulatory body for Manitoba Psychologists.
Dr. Decter is a member in good standing of the collegial body for Manitoba Psychologists, The Manitoba Psychological Society (MPS).
Dr. Decter is a registered provider under the Non-insured Health Benefits Program for First Nations and Inuit (NIHB).

Dr. Decter completed his Master of Science degree at McGill University and then returned to the University of Manitoba where he completed doctoral studies in Clinical Psychology. Dr. Decter’s keen interest in mindfulness-based therapies started during his doctoral studies when he carried out research examining the impact of mindfulness-based psychological interventions on pain experience. As the capstone of his clinical training Dr. Decter completed the full year Pre-Doctoral Internship in Professional Psychology at the University of Manitoba Student Counselling Centre.
Upon completion of his Doctoral Thesis and Internship in 2010 Dr. Decter was hired at the University of Manitoba Student Counselling Centre and has worked there in various roles–counsellor, consultant, psychologist, clinical supervisor–for the past ten years. For the last five years he was the coordinator of the Counselling Service at Bannatyne Campus, responsible for psychological service delivery for all Health Sciences students (Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Occupational Therapy and graduate students) on the Bannatyne campus of the University of Manitoba.
Dr. Decter has a keen interest in psychotherapy education and training and has taught psychotherapy skills to graduate students in the Clinical Psychology program at the University of Manitoba, where he also has been a practicum supervisor, mentoring graduate students in clinical and psychotherapy skills.
Dr. Decter has extensive experience in the use of mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches to healing, mental health and well-being. He started his own personal meditation practice in 2002 and uses evidence-based mindfulness and meditation-based psychological interventions to help clients with anxiety, depression, chronic pain, workplaces stress and burnout and a wide range of other problems.
In parallel to his work at the University of Manitoba and the Counselling Centre Dr. Decter has always maintained a private practice allowing him to focus on his central interest and passion: working collaboratively with clients in psychotherapy to help them solve their problems and live more, effective, rewarding lives. In 2016, Dr. Decter departed the University of Manitoba to devote himself full-time to the current and future clients in his private practice.
